Raider Sports

This winter, Harrison High School had 13 individuals move beyond sectional action, 8 individuals moved beyond the regional level and 2 beyond the semi-state level of competition. 4 Raiders qualified for the state finals in their sport, and Harrison had its first individual capture a state title since the 1989-90 school year.

One of Harrison teams finished as the runner up in the HCC, and Raider squads captured the championships at 2 different invitationals.

This season, 8 Raiders were chosen as All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference athletes, 13 were chosen as All-Sectional athletes, 7 as All-Regional athletes, and 1 was selected for an All-State honor. At least 4 Harrison athletes have earned Academic All-State honors, and 2 have also been nominated for All American status.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team finished with a record of 16 - 7 and in a tie for 4th place in the HCC. This is impressive considering the fact that the team went into this season with very limited varsity experience on its roster. As the season progressed, the Raiders won seven games in a row, and defeated McCutcheon in the sectional semi-finals, before losing to Kokomo in the championship game by only four points. Two Harrison players made the All Conference team, and senior Bobby Riddell finished his career by setting a new school record for 3 point field goals made. This squad played with a lot of energy and was very enjoyable to watch. Although it will be sad to see three seniors depart, an exciting group of nine letter winners will be returning for next season.

Boys Swimming

The Raider boys swim team started the year with several untested swimmers, but, what they lacked in experience, they made up for with their work ethic. With only 15 athletes on the roster, it was difficult to compete in some of the larger meets; however, they still finished with an overall record of 5 - 7. As was evident at the sectional meet, the Raiders all improved their personal best times. Two first-year swimmers, senior Brady Thompson and junior Steven Zoss, turned in spectacular performances in their first IHSAA tournament event. Senior Mark Albrecht leaves as a four year letter winner, but he is one of only two seniors on the team, so the Raiders will have 13 returning letter winners to build around next year. The goal of this group will be to improve their overall record and place higher in the HCC meet.

Cheerleading

Probably the most overlooked squad in our athletic department, the HHS cheerleaders definitely have the longest season of any of our sports, not finishing their season until the conclusion of the boys basketball sectional. The squad also was competitive in all of their meets, finishing 3rd at the sectional meet and 15th at the state meet. The program had 25 athletes this year and only three will graduate. Shay Richeson finishes her career earning three varsity letters in cheerleading. Hopefully, this group will continue to work toward generating our ever increasing school spirit.

Girls Basketball

The HHS girls basketball team plays a very tough schedule and still managed to record a 10 - 13 record, including enough conference wins to tie for 5th place. As the season progressed, so did the squad. They won five out of their last six games of the season, advancing to the sectional championship game and leading most of the way before losing to Kokomo. This group was successful because our players understood what it meant to play as a "TEAM". They had no superstars, but they gave their best effort every time they stepped on the court. Unfortunately, four seniors have been lost to graduation, but several players with varsity experience will return for next season. This squad will set some lofty goals for the 2005 - 06 season!

Girls Swimming

The Raider girls swim team improved from last year more than any HHS winter sport. They completed their season with a record of 4 - 9 and a 7th place finish in the HCC. They have 20 athletes on their roster, which doubles the total from a year ago. Freshman Jenny Connolly broke three school records and Kelci Bryant broke our school's diving record. Bryant also went on to capture the State Diving Championship with a new state record of 504.1 points. This squad will only lose 3 seniors. They are excited about the progress being made and are looking forward to a successful 2005 - 06 season.

Gymnastics

With only three girls on the roster, the HHS gymnastics squad was very small in numbers, but still competed at a very high level and all three girls improved their scores from last year. The squad finished with a record of 31 - 31, competing in some very tough weekend tournaments against some of the top programs in the state and capturing the championship at the Southmont Invitational. Sophomore Kaila DeBesse qualified for the regional on the vault. The team gained a great deal of valuable experience this year and all three gymnasts are eager to return next season with the goal of qualifying for the team regional.

Wrestling

Harrison's wrestling team once again posted an outstanding record at 18 - 8, with a 2nd place finish in the HCC. During the regular season, this squad also captured the Harrison Super Duals championship, they finished 2nd at the sectional and lost in a very hard fought regional championship match. In addition to the success of the team, several individuals turned in outstanding performances. The Raiders had 4 sectional champions and 2 regional champions. Seniors Tony Metzger and Seth Parker, both qualified for the state meet. Metzger finished 7th at 130 lbs and also set three new school records. This squad will be hit hard by graduation, losing nine seniors. However, the returning athletes have significant varsity experience and are expected to carry on the winning tradition of the program.

Class of 1976

Don and Kris Milakis Hadley never got the chance to paint the Barn while they were students at Harrison. So, for their 25 year reunion, they and two good friends who are also classmates, Hal and Rick, decided to paint the Barn about 2:30 in the morning. They turned their halogen lights on the Barn and it just glowed. As they were just finishing up, a sheriff's car appeared and drove through the school. They gathered everything up and took off, but the sheriff pulled them over to see whose vehicle was still parked at school. When Don gave him his license, the sheriff looked at him and said, "Aren't you a little old to be painting the Barn?" We just laughed. But looking back, we are never too old to keep such an honored tradition going! Kris can be reached at kmhadley@purdue.edu and Don can be reached at HADLEY@MINTEL.NET.
